Do you like the sound of the waves? Would you like to tame the rough seas? Do you like to watch the flora and fauna from close quarters? Do you like the challenges of managing a metal monster? If yes, then Marine Engineering is the field for you. Marine Engineers are the members of a ship’s crew that operate and maintain the propulsion and other systems on board the vessel. Marine Engineering staff also deal with the “Hotel” facilities on board, notably the sewage, lighting, air conditioning and water systems. They deal with bulk fuel transfers, and require training in firefighting and first aid, as well as in dealing with the ship’s boats and other nautical tasks- especially with cargo loading/discharging gear and safety systems, though the specific cargo discharge function remains the responsibility of deck officers and deck workers. Marine Engineer Officers are recruited for their aptitude in both practical and academic areas, their ability to solve problems and good leadership potential.Electronic Technicians are the ship’s experts on electronics and, given the importance of electronic technology, they make a vital contribution towards ensuring a ship is ready to respond to any orders 24/7. Once you complete your academic qualification in the Russia,any where you can find a job.

A common Engineering crew for a ship is:

* Chief Engineer
* Second Engineer / First Assistant Engineer
* Third Engineer / Second Assistant Engineer
* Fourth Engineer / Third Assistant Engineer
* Fifth Engineer / Junior Engineer
* Oiler (unlicenced qualified rating)
* Greaser/s (unlicensed qualified rating)
* Entry-level rating (such as Wiper (occupation), Utilityman, etc)

Marine engineering comes in two families
o- Sea Going Marine Engineering- These are the people this sight is specifically aimed at although there are some parts equally of interest to both
o- Shore Based Marine Engineering – These are people who do not study for certificate of competencies but instead follow an academic route which leads them to the research and development side .

Sea Going Marine Engineering
Entry qualifications are very much dependent on the root you follow. This can range from none to a degree. No qualifications are required when you first start as a member of the crew gaining experience and knowledge whilst working on a vessel. An increasing level of qualification is required as the curse which leads to the first certificate of competency is condensed.Traditionally you will start as a cadet having 5 or more high school qualifications. Hopefully this will be under sponsorship from an employer. Completion of the cadet ship should give a qualification of a higher diploma or Degree. These qualifications are very important as they contin units which do not have to be retaken when you try for the higher levels of certificates in later years.Having obtained your first certificate you will now be qualified to sail as a watch keeping engineer on a variety of vessels. You will be expected to have at least a rudimentary knowledge of large diesel engines, air compressors, fridge systems, pumps, boilers and many other ancillary equipment. You will also have some knowledge on electrical, electronic and control engineering. You will have some ability in the workshop including machining and welding. In future years you can chose to move into the many shore based industries that are currently crying out for experienced engineers such as technical superintendency, Accident investigations, damage assessor and surveying.

Shore Based Marine Engineering
There are degree and above qualifications in marine engineering and naval architecture which allow entry into the various design and development side of vessels. There are in  addition qualifications specifically for sea going personnel that are looking to come ashore .The specialist degrees are a Masters level degree. Along with this degree student are issued an internationally recognized license (Issued under the provisions of the international convention on standards of training, certification and watch keeping for seafarers, 1978 as amended 1995) which allows them to serve on board ships and in ports. Students, who follow the courses where merchant naval officers are prepared, are provided with additional training on ships of the Russian merchant navy.
